Ham on Wry IV

Ham on Wry IV
The Erik Friborg Celebration Classic

It’s that time. I’m going to ride this rocket once again. I am once more spitting in Death’s face, and celebrating the life and contributions of Erik Friborg, and the MTGO Community. Since Erik’s Birthday is on a Monday this year, I’m throwing the event the Sunday before.

Time:
Sunday, May 3rd 2015
Noon EST/1600 UTC

PST EST CET MSK
0800 1200 1700 2000

Format:
Constructed Vintage, X Rounds Swiss, T8

8-16 17-32 33-64 65-128 129-226 227+
4 5 6 7 8 9

Announcements and game chat: channel #HAM
Registration is open on Gatherling.
Intentional Draws are allowed.

Players, pairings, and standings for this Event, along with the current Prize Pool, can be seen here. Note the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet for easy navigation. You can review past events, as well.

The Riot Act…

Bullying, mobbing, foul language, & general rudeness will not be tolerated. This includes “snide remarks” about decks/playing ability, personal attacks, racial slurs, etc. A player will get 1 warning. Repeat violations will result in disqualification from the Event. This will be enforced. Flagrant violations may be screenshot and reported to WotC for harassment.

Please refrain from talking in other players games, or PMing players in a game. This will allow players to concentrate fully without interruption. We cannot prevent players from talking within their own game. If both players in a game agree to allow “peanut gallery” chat, this rule may be waived. Violations by players will get 1 warning. Repeat violations may result in disqualification from the Event. Flagrant violations may be screenshot and reported to WotC for harassment.

As people playing in my events over the years can attest, I will get medieval if the situation so demands. Don’t make me get naked.

If you want to make a personal pledge, clan-based pledge, bounty of some sort, or a direct donation, let me know. You can also help support Erik’s family by buying cards from Hammybot.

Hammybot

One of the many wonderful things that came out of the first Ham on Wry project was Hammybotwhich was set up by Heath over at MTGO Traders to sell off Erik’s MTGO collection. All of the proceeds from Hammybot are slated to go to Erik’s widow and boy-child.

Hammybot is still around, and prices are discounted to 5% below  MTGO Traders list. Hammybot still has over 25,000 cards left, and almost 6,700 Tickets have been raised! Be sure to check out Hammybot first for all your card needs, and help out a good cause! At the first Ham on Wry event, several players put up cards, boosters, and tickets as personal pledges and bounties. You can use Hammybot to purchase cards for use as pledges or bounties for this year’s event for a double dose of good karma!

Projected Payout:

With this much chum in the waters, I expect a large turnout, with a great many sharks. Erik was no carebear when it came to gameplay. In fact, I’d call him downright cut-throat. I expect a significant percentage of players showing up to not be carebears, either.

Once again, to be clear:
There will be sharks. Oh yes, there will be sharks.

Overdrive! Turns 3!

Overdrive! Turns Three!

A Brief History of Overdrive!
excepted from Overdriven! 1

Overdrive! began as an Overextended event with little fanfare at 830PM Eastern time on July 4th, 2011. It just so happened I did a Mad Max Marathon one Sunday, watched Highlander the following Monday, and then played in the Tuesday Overextended event. Someone mentioned they wanted more Overextended events to me during a break between rounds, I was listening to AC/DC’s Highway to Hell, and *click*! It really just all came together in its entirety in that split second. I lined up a sponsorship, hammered out the details, and a few days later we were ready to rock. And the 4th of July was just too serendipitous. I “put up the ads” and the rest… is history.

The last Overextended game on MTGO was played on August 22nd, 2011, and Modern became an officially sanctioned format online with the August 24th downtime. Overdrive! jumped right in. The first Modern games on MTGO were played August 29, at Overdrive! #9.

By now you’re probably well aware of my propensity to throw together extravagant prizes for significant events. Over the years I’ve put together some amazing prize pools, if I do say so myself.

*pats himself on the back*

Rest assured, I have given in to this urge once again for our third birthday, which will be Overdrive! #139, on July 7th.

Face to Face Games, our sponsor, has generously kicked in some additional ducats for the brouhaha, so the winner will receive CAD$25 store credit, and the runner-up will receive CAD$10!

But wait! There’s more!

The folks over at WotC have also kicked down! And how! They must like me, despite the [REDACTED] I continually fling at them. Go figure. WotC has given me the go ahead to hand out…

Check out the prize pool I was able to cobble together for this shindig:

  • Winner – CAD$25, 9 MTGO Modern Masters boosters
  • Runner-up – CAD$10, 6 MTGO Modern Masters boosters
  • Semifinalists – 3 MTGO Modern Masters boosters
  • Losing a match – 1 MTGO Modern Masters booster

Wait. What? Losing a match get you a booster?

That’s right! If you play a match, and lose, you get a booster. You have to actually play, though. You can’t just register and not show up. Boosters will be added to players accounts by WotC later in the week.

But I also wanted to make sure that everyone who plays walks away with something, so this seems like a good way to do it.

I hope to see you there!

Phone Poem 442

Another Saturday whiling away
Writing’s all done it’s time to play
Got quite a bit organized and packed
Decks lined up neatly on the rack
Double Storm intro followed by Bears from the Loam
Sovereign Conscription to bring it all home
Watched a bunch of Eternal Weekend
Took a break, went to DQ, came home again
Then some more Magic coverage on the phone
Got bored with that so started a poem
And here we are.
How are you? I hope you’re well.
On this end things seem to be doing swell
All things considered, yeah. I’m fine
Sitting here tapping at the phone to unwind
So
What are you doing?

Posted from my phone.
